The Fil Au Chinois brand is famous in the world of sewing for its incomparably strong threads. Au Chinois threads are mainly used in the high-end textile industry including luxury leather goods or the manufacture of leather jewelry (e.g. watch straps) which require exemplary quality and consistency! The story of Fil Au Chinois
The Fil Au Chinois brand was founded by François-Philibert Vrau in November 1847 after having created his company in Lille twenty years earlier. Its success was instantaneous, particularly thanks to its new sewing thread presentation model: balls wrapped with a label and stored in boxes.
In the 1850s, the Fil Au Chinois company grew prodigiously with the arrival of the son of the founder of the brand: Philibert Vrau and his incredible business sense. It was a success: annual sales, which were 282,000 boxes in 1864, were multiplied by 7 in 10 years, or 1,950,000 boxes in 1875!

Why the name “Fil Au Chinois”?
The explanation is old, it dates from the time when interest in the Orient in France was part of the general trend with the various maritime expeditions that were carried out and the global opening of China and Japan. The choice of name was part of this cultural movement.

The Toulemonde brothers
Like most brands originating from the North of France, Fil Au Chinois experienced a long period of weakening...
But thanks to the support of certain enthusiasts of old French productions, the Fil Au Chinois brand resisted and emerged stronger.
In 2007, Olivier and Bruno Toulemonde took over the company by rehabilitating the machines used for production and decided to restore Fil Au Chinois to all its former glory!

Fil Au Chinois, today
Le Fil Au Chinois employs around fifty people on its two production sites in Bondues (59) and Marcq-en-Barœul (59). The brand remains famous in the world of leather sewing for its products of incomparable strength.
